How to move a 2000lbs+ lathe: get a bunch a guys

16-Sept-06 documenting the electrical connections. 3-Phase. The start/stop has a reverse button on the top. The motor start and direction coils wiring. This was 'as found'. I don't think all the open wiring is quite up to code.... The overhead lineshaft and clutch engage lever. Paul removes the Jacobs 20N chuck from the tailstock. It has a 1 16-Sept-07 The carriage as found. The headstock as found. Paul has already used a pry-bar to move the lathe away from the wall, and disconnected the flatbelt. Paul's cabinet shop in the morning. Except for the little finished space in the front, it is mostly 2x4 and tin construction (walls and roof). Positioning the rented trailer at the dock door. The heavy-duty, all metal trailer was the right trailer of choice for this move. Bud checks out the situation before the heavy lifting gets going while Paul gathers lathe tools from around the shop. 16-Sept-06 The W.B.Knight drill press we are also going to move. The motor linkage to the drill press is functional, yet primative/dangerous at the same time. 16-Sept-07 The W.B.Knight Mill will also be moved today. The portable shop crane is unloaded and assembled. 2-Ton shop crane at the headstock and a 2-Ton floor jack at the other end allows us to pull the lathe our of the corner. A pair of rented machinery skates (under the tailstock) take a lot of grunt work out of moving the lathe around. How to get the lathe from the ground to the trailer bed? Discussion abounds, but Howard has a plan involving wood ramps and cribbing. Bud and John look on, awaiting their cue to Push! With Bud standing on a step stool, he is almost as tall as Al. Both of them work on removing the heavy overhead lineshaft assembly. The lineshaft clutch assembly as found. 16-Sept-06 With the lathe loaded in the trailer, we turn out attention to loading the drill press. Ready for the trip to her new home! Loading the mill electric motor to flat belt converter assembly. The crew hard at work - George, Al, Bud, John, Bill, Howard. The Mill drill has been laid on its side and hoisted using the shop crane for loading. With the shop crane boom at full extension, a little manuvering is required to get the mill on the trailer. 16-Sept-06 The Heavy Iron moving crew: former owner Paul, photographer George, Bud, Bill, Howard, John, Al. This is what it takes to move machinery! 16-Sept-06 Okay, lunch break is over. Time to unload all the machinery we loaded this morning! The unload plan seems to be formed on the fly... Here's what we'll do---Use the shop crane to pick up one end... ...and pull and push the lathe off the trailer. The final unloading step: lift the tail portion still on the trailer and drive the trailer out from under it. With the lathe safely in the garage, Time to disconnect the shop crane and unload the rest of the machinery. The drill press is unloaded. My, this one-car garage is getting full. Next, we unload the Mill drill. The last of the machinery is safely in the garage. It's 3:30 in the afternoon, time to clean up and take a small nap from the days work!
