Problem found! The firemans side valve crosshead guide does not have enough travel in it--the crosshead jams against the cast wall. Not wanting to tear the running gear down and machine the .100 inches of additional travel, we grab a small round rotary bit and remove the offending material. Interestingly, the engineers side needs only the slightest adjustment.
