21-April-10 We switched back from working on the Freight Elevator to the firepan because I acquired some wet refractory grout to line the pan with -- only the pan isn't ready! I had jumpstarted the pan fabrication by purchasing one from http://www.RailRoadWarehouse.com. I'm very happy with it - nice TIG welds on the corners, the deflecter was spot-welded like the print calls for, all the bends nice and true.
Strangely, there are two different firepan designs in the drawing set. C-2116 in the boiler section and C-2158 in the Cab Controls section. They are by two different draftsmen and C-2116 is undated. We did not use C-2116. It calls for a hinged damper door and no side air intake vents. We didn't like the design, the damper door can't open very far because it hits the tail cradle. After spending an hour going through the drawings I found the other firepan design in the Cab Controls section, which didn't make sense to me, but were more complete!
Using the biggest angleplate in the shop with some clamps, we spot-drilled the holes and used sheetmetal Knockout Punches to form the holes. The hole for the sparkplug bushing is already in the pan.
