12-May-10 Bill rough machines the screw shaft extensions. He wishes my little Clausing lathe would move the carriage and compound simultanously to produce a 45 degree cut, but the angle is more like 25 degees. He cuts the 45 degree bevel by hand.
Here's a shop tip: we want the bevel go from the 1-1/8" diameter come to a 5/8" diameter at the top (don't come to a point). Bill turns a length down to 5/8" diameter first, then cuts the 45 degree bevel. When the top of the bevel touches the 5/8" diameter portion of the shaft, we know we've hit our mark.
After cutting the bevel he thruns down and threads the end of the shaft to go into the screw.
